A reader configuration may control up to 4 doors/gates which must be within a range of 100 ft. of the the host computer.  For greater range or more doors/gates, additional configurations can be purchased.  A minimum of two card-readers is required per configuration.  One reader is used for local card creation and maintenance.  One or more (up to 4) additional card-readers are required for each door/gate you want to control.

The plug-n-play design allows easy expansion for additional card-reader stations.  Up to 5 readers may be attached to the host PC.  Or, use multiple hosts for a distributed approach.  The diagram below indicates a typical SCAS reader configuration consisting of a single host PC, two smartcard readers, and related hardware (USB line extender and USB-to-serial device not shown): 

A local reader is placed near the host PC, allowing you, the user,  to format and maintain smartcards.  The remote reader is located in the remote access control area.  A customer or employee desiring access inserts his pre-formatted card and gains entry to the area. 

The beauty of smartcards is that they contain the information in a securely encoded format within the card itself, eliminating the need for the host PC to maintain a large user database.  The card is automatically updated with each customer access.  Formatted cards may be initalized for a pre-determined termination date after which they will no longer permit access entry unless re-formatted by you.  You may also designate a specified number of maximum accesses if desired.
